Novel Depression Treatment Approved by the FDA

Kira Stein, West Coast TMS InstituteKira Stein, West Coast TMS InstituteWe are here to tell you about a breakthrough treatment for people of have been diagnosed with clinical depression. It is called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS, and we are excited to offer this treatment here at the West Coast TMS Institute. TMS consists of magnetic impulses applied to the outside of the head, directly overling the area of the brain associated with mood — the prefrontal cortex. Stimulation of this area of the brain can promote relief from depression. No drugs are involved and no surgery or invasive procedure is required at all. This is a treatment for people who can’t tolerate drugs or drugs side effects or those who have tried several depression drugs without feeling better.

Treatment Should Be Chosen Because:

It’s Effectiveness Has Been Proven

  • Major Depression has been treated successfully, and extensive testing and procedure refinement has strengthened the treatment’s effectiveness.
  • Unlike many other treatment procedures, TMS will not diminish your day-to-day capabilities. You will be awake and in total control of your faculties. You can even watch TV or talk while being treated. After the procedure, your day continues normally, with no effect on driving, walking or attentiveness.

No Drugs Are Involved

  • Pregnant or breast feeding patients and or anyone with difficulty tolerating drugs or the side effects, should consider TMS as a potential treatment option.

Mild Side Effect Profile, especially compared to medications

  • Initial scalp or facial discomfort during the procedure is usually mild, occurs primarily at the beginning of the treatment, and is commony relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.
