woman meditationWith an estimated 16% Americans suffering from major depressive disorder at some point in their lives, many doctors will treat depression with the use of antidepressant medications.  Clinical depression is a serious condition and can include symptoms that risk suicide and general functioning, so it is important for first-line treatments to include all evidence-based natural treatments, in addition to antidepressant medications.  Many people say they feel tired, blunted, and just not themselves when on medications, especially higher doses.  One of the best ways to avoid the need for medications or high-doses of them is to use natural treatments for depression early on or as an augmentation to prescription medication.

It is in your best interest to learn how to treat depression naturally and safely.  Talking it over with a doctor will give you a better idea of the different natural ways to fight depression, since there are dozens of different options to fight depression naturally.  Some will work better than others; it just depends on the person.  Some may not work at all or may interact with medication you are already on.  It is a matter of consulting with your doctor and trying out suitable options, seeing what works and what does not.

NATURAL DEPRESSION TREATMENT OPTIONS THAT YOUR DOCTOR OR PSYCHIATRIST MAY HAVE YOU TRY:

  • Nutrition, which includes supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, certain B vitamins and vitamin D, avoiding certain inflammatory foods, and eating better.
  • Talk therapy, such as going to a therapist and just sitting down and talking about your feelings.
  • Relaxation therapy such as meditation, yoga or massage therapy.
  • Deep breathing exercises which relieve tension, stress, anxiety, and depression in some people.
  • Exercise therapies such as brisk walking, swimming, cycling, or hiking can help with increasing blood flow to the brain and endorphin release which can help you focus, and calm and relax you.  Signing up for a volleyball or basketball class or club at a local community park or junior college can have social benefits and naturally treat depression, as well.
  • Bright light therapy can also be a helpful natural depression treatment for both winter and non-seasonal depressions.

These are just a few of the dozens of available options. These natural treatment options can be used together or individually and can potentially help with your depression.  If you want to learn more about natural depression treatment, consult with a knowledgeable practitioner and determine what works for you.

Please always consult with a doctor or psychiatrist before trying any of these methods.  They will need to analyze your current condition and figure out what the best treatment options would be for you.  There are many depression sufferers out there and having different treatment options in addition to prescription medicine is always valuable.

Just using even one of these natural treatments for depression may potentially help improve your life.  Nobody wants to go through depression, but having the aid of a physician and utilizing a natural remedy may be the key to your achieving a healthy and happy state of mind.

3 Finding a natural cure for depressionFinding a natural cure for depression may be a bit challenging.  All you have to do is turn on your television, flip through a magazine, or even look at a YouTube video and you are bombarded with messages from pharmaceutical companies.  This can lead us to overlook very basic, natural alternative treatments for depression that are available but less advertised. Depression is a serious condition, and while sufferers of disabling forms of depression may need to use man-made medications; a natural remedy for depression may suffice for milder cases.

NATURALLY FIGHTING DEPRESSION BY SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

Identifying the underlying causes of what makes you feel depressed can be the first step toward knowing how to beat depression naturally.  Many times, when you suffer from depression, you may be in a rut, withdrawn and isolated, with life no longer feeling fun or interesting. You may even feel that there is nothing worth learning/nothing new to be discovered.  If you do have these types of feelings, try to force yourself to get up, make plans, and get back into the world and interact with others again.  Enroll in some non-credit courses, learn a new hobby, join a book club, or volunteer for food bank, etc.  The hardest part is getting out of your comfort zone and doing something different.  When searching for your new activity, start small.  You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.   You may even want to make a light schedule for yourself, forcing yourself to participate – call it priming the pump.

A NATURAL DEPRESSION APPROACH:  COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING

Fighting depression naturally, without pharmaceuticals requires effort, but you have got to push; don’t give up on yourself.  Many depressed individuals, no matter what the situation, are predisposed to jumping to the worst conclusion, always believing that events will only turn out badly.  Simply becoming more aware of this negative thinking tendency is the first step toward developing skills to question them, realize if they are exaggerated and irrational, and develop more effective coping strategies.  Talk to yourself and don’t allow these negative thoughts to control your life.  Know that you are worthy; you are capable; and you are good.  If you need a coach to help you learn to think in a less catastrophic, more realistic, way, find a cognitive behavioral therapist at your nearest university psychology or psychiatry clinic, or through your general doctor, who can help you learn and develop these important skills.

NATURALLY BEING IN THE MOMENT, EATING  & SLEEPING

Mindfulness meditation can also help you become more in the moment in a positive and self-accepting manner that promotes a better mood.  If you have any religious beliefs, praying is a spiritual way to develop mindfulness and gratitude. Studies have clearly shown that prayer, chanting, even the use of imagery, has positive effects on depression.

There are many natural ways to treat depression; some are so simple, you may not even consider them to be a treatment.   A healthy diet and regular exercise contribute to fighting feelings of depression.  Foods which are high in fat content and alcohol, while they may make us feel happy and in the moment, will make us feel sluggish and tired very soon after the “happy glow” fades.

Natural depression cures should also include healthy sleep practices. In addition to a smart diet and proper exercise, a sufficient amount of rest is also required.  When we sleep, the body takes the opportunity to regulate levels of hormones in the body.  This is important because when this doesn’t happen the body may try to stimulate itself by eating excessively in order to stay awake, which can lead to weight gain and low energy levels.

NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION – SIMPLY THE FIRST STEP TO CARE FOR YOURSELF

Many of these natural remedies for depression can be first-steps towards effectively managing your mood.  But if you find that these natural remedies are too difficult to take-on by yourself, then ask for help from family, friends, your spiritual leader, therapist, or a psychiatrist. Drug treatment and potential interactions with natural remedies should be explored carefully with your doctor ahead of time.  Since depression can feel powerless and knowledge is power, it is important to find a doctor who is open to investigating all treatment options for depression with you, including natural treatment approaches.

2-A-Brief-Summary-of-the-Natural-for-AnxietyAnxiety disorders are the most common psychological conditions, and while there are ample medications available to address anxiety, there are also several natural remedies for anxiety, as we shall discuss in this article. Almost every person experiences anxiety in challenging situations. Anxiety is normal when it helps you focus your abilities and resources to manage important or urgent situations, but anxiety can become a problem if it persists, or is excessive for the situation.

Passionflower herb, which can be used in a tea formulation or in drops, is also a natural anxiety and insomnia remedy. It also contains some powerful cancer-fighting antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be an effective natural remedy for anxiety and usually can be safely used without significant side effects.  Because it is sedating, it is important not to use this remedy with other sedating agents or when operating complex machinery. There may be effects on heart conduction, so if you have a known cardiac condition, check with your doctor before using passionflower.

Another natural remedy for anxiety is lemon balm. The use of lemon balm can be traced back as far as 300 BC by Arab healers. According to Avicenna, an eleventh century physician, lemon balm is said to strengthen the vital spirit and make the heart merry and joyful. Modern studies on natural cures for anxiety confirm that lemon balm improves peoples’ moods and enhances calmness and muscle relaxation. It also can promote alertness and, when used together with other herbs like valerian and chamomile, help with sleep.

young coupleWhen depressed, people feel different from their usual selves. Often they feel gloomy, indecisive, no longer interested in things that they used to be passionate about. Clinical depression is a common condition, and contrary to what some people believe, there are many different natural ways to treat depression, as well as the usual medical ways of treating depression. If you feel hopeless in your depression, know that there are many resources and ways to treat it. Depending on the severity of your depression, it is possible to beat depression naturally.

EXERCISE
Exercise is a natural treatment for depression, and is a very important component in fighting depression naturally by lowering stress hormones and balancing neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Exercising regularly for at least 30 minutes a few times weekly by either doing cardio, lifting weights, yoga, walking, swimming, or whatever you prefer can increase blood flow to your brain and cause your body to release endorphins, our feel-good chemicals, which are known to reduce depression. There is evidence that yoga and Tai Chi can reduce depressive symptoms as well. There are so many natural ways to treat depression!

EATING HEALTHY
Eating healthy is important when treating depression. It is another natural remedy for depression. Healthy foods have a positive effect on health, and make people feel better. Try eating lots of fruits and vegetables for a week, and see how you feel afterward! Most likely, you’ll be on track to relieving depression. Stable blood sugar levels make it easier to maintain a balanced mood. Start your day off on a good footing by having breakfast with some protein, and make sure the rest of your meals and snacks include foods with a low glycemic index, such as proteins and complex carbohydrates. Processed foods are often high in sugars so the rawer and more natural the food, the more likely it will be better for you body and your mood. Also avoid soda, sugary drinks, fatty foods, fried foods, and junk food.
Drink plenty of pure water and you will think and sleep better too!
If you like sweets, get excited! There have been studies done showing that a little dark chocolate makes people feel better and it can treat stress and depression. Dark chocolate is made from cocoa, which is known to cause the release of serotonin, because it relaxes the brain’s blood vessels, therefore creating feel-good chemicals. This is one of the easiest tips on how to beat depression naturally.

OMEGA- 3 FATTY ACIDS
You can find these fats in cold-water fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel. You can also find omega-3’s in walnuts, and in some plants. There are also supplements containing omega-3, such as fish oil pills that are known to effectively help relieve depression. Because omega-3 fatty acids can increase bruising, it is important to tell your doctor you are taking them to make sure you are taking the proper amount and that there are no interactions.

GETTING ENOUGH REST
Another natural depression cure is to get plenty of sleep. Studies show that people who sleep 7-8 hours every night are happier and less likely to become depressed. Start by making lifestyle changes and if you are having trouble getting to bed early, turn technology off an hour before. Also, there are some teas, which are effective at relaxing people, therefore making it easier to fall asleep. Making sure the bedroom is dark, quiet and comfortably cool will also make a deep sleep more likely.

FEEL BETTER!
By making changes to your life such as getting more exercise, eating healthy, incorporating omega- 3 fatty acids, and getting sufficient sleep, you can use these natural depression remedies to your advantage. Drugs can also be helpful for more severe cases of depression, or when people are so deep into their depression they cannot exercise. Otherwise, surely these natural approaches will give you a jumpstart on the battle.

WestCoastLife‘s insight:

Inflammation appears to be the immediate deciding factor, though a history of childhood distress and lack of exercise are also significant contributors.  But these two factors can increase inflammation as well.  Depression is associated with many other illnesses that are depressioninflammatory, such as fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, and other auto-immune disease.  Any kind of body injury can lead to inflammation.  the question is — which came first, the inflammation or the depression?

We know that treating depression reduces the risk of another heart attack.   Is it because treating depression reduces inflammation or reduces serotonin-associated blood clotting?  Probably both.  As usual, there are more questions than answers.

Bottom line:  Whatever is good for your heart is good for your brain..  And Vice Versa.

The 5 Most Informative Videos on TMS

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a totally new concept in psychiatry. TMS involves the use of an MRI-strength magnet to stimulate brain cells in such away that promotes better brain functioning and connectivity. TMS is a non-invasive outpatient treatment for depression that poses a very low risk for side effects. Most doctors have not had hands-on experience with TMS, and so it is hard to find people with first-hand knowledge about what TMS is all about, what the experience of TMS is like, and why anyone would try transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of depression.

Up until transcranial magnetic stimulation became FDA cleared, patients have been limited to talk therapies, medication therapies, and electric stimulation therapies for depression treatment.  TMS is different in that it uses a magnetic field, not an electric current, to affect change in the brain’s processes.

Here are some videos on TMS that can shed light on what it is like to experience TMS and the science behind it:

Working memory is the ability to remember multiple peices of information for short-term use.  This type of memory is impaired in schizophrenia, and thus people with schizophrenia often have difficulties functioning. TMS on the frontal lobe appears to improve this type of memory and functioning, something I have seen at my center. – Kira Stein MD
